Janom Investments has installed a unique battery storage system for renewable energy in Slovakia, which is controlled by artificial intelligence. It is a unique technology in this field. The containerised battery storage system has a power of 438 kW and a capacity of 980 kWh and is also used to store electricity generated at the Kočkovce small hydropower plant in the Slovakia´s Považie region.
Janom Investments, a Slovak company that operates and invests in renewable energy in Slovakia and other European countries, has installed a unique battery system for energy management and storage at the Kočkovce hydropower plant. The container storage system contains a 980 kWh battery that can store not only the electricity generated by the Kočkovce small hydropower plant, but also electricity from the grid if needed. “The battery storage is fully managed by artificial intelligence, which oversees all generation sources and makes decisions about storing or supplying electricity to the grid based on the current electricity demand on the market. This technology is absolutely unique in Slovakia,” explains Matej Šanta, Director of Janom Energy & Battery.
The expansion of battery storage is an unstoppable trend in the energy industry today. Also according to a recent analysis by the International Energy Agency (IEA), battery energy storage systems capacities worldwide are expected to increase more than eightfold from today’s ~90 GW to ~760 GW by 2030.*
In addition to storing electricity at times when more electricity is being generated and supplying it at times when electricity is in demand, battery energy storage system is already being used for so-called ancillary services to ensure the stability of distribution and transmission grids. “This is what makes batteries the technology of the future. Not only do they increase the efficiency of renewables, but they are also a technology capable of ensuring the reliable, secure and economical operation of the power grid. The first BESS Kočkovce battery storage system is part of such a comprehensive energy solution within our Group. We are currently continuing to interconnect other power plants in the Group, to prepare new battery projects as well as to develop the communication and control infrastructure. Our goal is to achieve an economic and technical balance of the entire system and its gradual expansion. This pilot project shows us that our decision to invest in this way is the right one,” says Matej Šanta.
Janom Investments has the ambition to expand its battery portfolio in the coming years and to look for synergies between the Group’s investment verticals.
